Rubrics
A Rubric is an assessment tool for communicating expectations of quality. There is a way to set up custom or Outcome-based assessment criteria for scoring. You can add rubrics to assignments, quizzes and graded discussions.
Use a Rubric to:
- Communicate assessment expectations to users.
- Align pre-defined learning Outcomes to your course assessments.
- Assess online submissions in the SpeedGrader™.
Ways To Use Rubrics for Grading
Rubrics are typically comprised of rows and columns. Rows are used to define the various criteria being used to assess an assignment. Columns are used to define levels of performance for each criterion.
Rubrics as a reference. There are three ways you can leverage rubrics in your courses:
- Use rubrics to help students know exactly what you are expecting. It is not necessary to use the rubric as a grading tool. If you have any assignments that require peer reviews, then attaching a rubric is smart. It gives students a starting point for feedback.

Use rubrics as a grading tool. Simply click on the rubric rating for each criterion to calculate total point value. The calculated score will directly feed into the gradebook.

Use rubrics as a grading tool. But instead of leveraging the rubric ratings, write in your own comments and manually award point values to each criteria. The calculated score will directly feed into the gradebook.
